Pflugerville Community Invited to Discuss CROWN Act

“My dream is for little Joy to be happy and not have any negative feelings or thoughts about her hair,” Stiles said.

Stiles, along with Angel Carroll and Yolanda Gary-Fischer, are among the women working to raise awareness of Pflugerville’s CROWN legislation efforts.

“The CROWN act is really about doing what’s right for our community, our community of color, so we don’t have to worry about going to work and changing ourselves because we have braids or we wear our hair naturally,” Stiles said. .

CROWN stands for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair”. The CROWN Law is a law that prohibits discrimination based on race-related hair.

“I remember in 8th grade they made me cut my braids for school,” Carroll said. “They were considered distracting and the experience stayed with me even into adulthood.”

According to a 2019 Dove CROWN study, black women are 80% more likely to change their natural hair to fit social norms or job expectations.

Other cities, including Austin, have adopted CROWN laws. Lawmakers will also consider similar legislation in this session at the state level.

Zeta Phi Beta Sororority, Incorporated, Pi Omega Chapter Zeta will hold an open public comment on the CROWN law at Abundant Life Church in Pflugerville on February 21 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
