Paxton Announces Investigation into Blocking Home Ownership for Potentially Misleading Texas Consumers

Austin, Texas — Attorney General Paxton announced a lockdown investigation for potential violation of the Texas Fraudulent Trade Practices Act by misleading consumers with false claims about the prevalence of home title theft and the need for lockdown services.

Home Title Lock is a California-based organization that claims to provide 24/7 monitoring of consumer home rights. The company has come under scrutiny in recent months for questionable claims in its advertising, including a claim that the FBI calls property theft “one of the fastest growing white-collar cybercrimes in America.” According to news reports, Home Title Lock has admitted to selling its products to “older customers.”

To respond to these reports, Attorney General Paxton issued a Civil Investigation Request (CID) against Home Title Lock to investigate whether the company’s claims and advertising are false, misleading or misleading. CID requires Home Title Lock to hand over documents relating to its advertising and all documents supporting certain claims.

“I will not tolerate false, misleading, or misleading advertising that targets Texas consumers, especially Texas seniors,” Attorney General Paxton said. “If Home Title Lock misrepresents their services or the need for them, I will stop their illegal behavior.”
