Palm Bay City Council Discusses Drug Testing After Cocaine Was Found in Council Member’s Socks

PALM BAY, Florida. – Rep. Randy Fine of Palm Bay backed Peter Filiberto during his city council campaign, but after police said cops found 10 grams of cocaine in the councilman’s socks, Fine calls for Filiberto’s resignation, as does the mayor Palm Bay Rob Medina.

“I think it’s terrible,” Fine said. “The allegations are quite disturbing.”

Since Saturday night, when police said Filiberto was speeding and passing stop signs while riding a motorcycle with a suspended license through the 55 and older community, Fine said he and the council member have been on the phone.

“My advice to him was that he should retire,” Fine said. “I would like to retire, not be fired, so I think that would be the right thing to do.”

Filiberto attended the last city council meeting on February 2, but there was no council member on Thursday evening.

In his absence, the city council voted unanimously to send a letter to the governor requesting that Filiberto be removed from office. The council also called on Filiberto to resign.

“I’m not going to bully her and say I’m perfect, but one thing is for sure: I didn’t break the law while I was an elected official,” council member Kenny Johnson said.

A councilor who misses four consecutive meetings will vacate the councilor seat, meaning Filiberto could lose his position if he misses three more meetings in a row, the city attorney said.

Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina petitioned for voluntary drug testing following Filiberto’s arrest, although council members were not on board and the petition was denied.

In Tallahassee, Fine said he had not yet spoken to the governor about Filiberto’s uncertain future.

“I assume he and his family are making the right decision,” Fine said of Filiberto. “You can miss one meeting, but you can’t miss them forever.”
