Pajaro evacuees reunite with pets abandoned during floods

While the Pajaro community is still partly underwater on Wednesday night, many evacuees are finally reunited with the pets they had to leave behind when their homes were flooded.

“We’re going out and saving the animals that are sadly left behind,” said Beth Brookhauser of the Monterey County SPCA.

Hundreds of workers and volunteers worked with the sheriff’s office and the National Guard to rescue animals from flood waters.

“We have also reunited dozens of those we rescued from flooded areas with their loving owners. It was such an amazing experience to be able to get in, get these animals out of danger and reunite them with their families,” Broekhauser said.

It’s been a few days since the city was forced to evacuate, which means the animals haven’t been properly cared for.

“These rescue pets have been through a lot. They come to us hungry, a little thin. Quite a few of them are covered in very unpleasant water. We try to take care of them, clean them and feed them,” Broekhauser said.

The Monterey County SPCA has over 200 rescued animals. Now they are working to reunite them with their owners.

“Everything from dogs and cats to chickens and parrots. We have rabbits, parrots and all kinds of animals,” Broekhauser said.

Although the work is not finished yet, the rescuers are satisfied with her work.

“We were very, very busy, but it was very rewarding,” Brookhauser said.

Monterey County SPCA workers say they are also giving evacuees the animal feed they need.

But they say supplies are running out fast, so any help from the public is welcome.
