Orlando student gets over 3 years in jail for Capitol attack

Former Full Sail University Student Sentenced to 3 Years Imprisonment for US Capitol Attack

Grady Owens, a former Full Sail University student from the Orlando area, has been sentenced to 37 months of imprisonment, followed by 24 months of supervised release. The sentence was passed in a federal courtroom in Washington for his participation in the attack on the US Capitol. Owens pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer and disorderly conduct at the Capitol under the plea deal he made with prosecutors in November 2022.

Owens was arrested in April 2021 after federal investigators claimed that he hit a police officer in the head with his skateboard during the attack at the US Capitol. Judge Beryl A. Howell sentenced Owens to pay $2,000 in restitution. However, the judge allowed Owens to self-surrender at a later date, and therefore, Owens is still free.

Owens wrote a letter to the judge ahead of his sentencing after his attorney asked the court for leniency. In the letter, he expressed remorse for his actions and wrote, “That day will forever be one of the worst days of my life. The day that I didn’t conduct myself with positivity and love.”

Owens is one of 36 Central Florida residents arrested and charged in connection with the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. His case is another reminder of the ongoing criminal investigations and prosecutions conducted by the Department of Justice related to the events on that day.

The judge’s ruling in Owens’ case is a message to those who participated in the US Capitol attack that there will be consequences for their actions. The sentence shows that the court is taking these cases seriously and that justice will prevail.

The Department of Justice continues to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. Owens’ sentencing is just one chapter in a long series of prosecutions that will continue to unfold as the Department of Justice continues its work.

In conclusion, Owens’ involvement in the US Capitol attack has led to his imprisonment for 37 months, which serves as a reminder that those who participated in the attack will face the consequences of their actions. The sentence represents a step forward in ensuring that justice is served in the aftermath of one of the most significant events in recent US history.
