Orlando Restaurant Embraces Diversity: Hungry Pants Fosters Inclusivity for All

Former gourmet cupcake truck owner Alex Marin opened his first brick-and-mortar restaurant, Hungry Pants, in October 2019 just south of Downtown Orlando. Marin, driven by a nickel and a prayer, embarked on this new culinary venture with the intention of encapsulating the universal feeling of hunger. Describing the name “Hungry Pants” as playful and slightly disruptive, Marin drew inspiration from expressions like “sassy pants” and “smarty pants” to create a memorable and relatable brand.

Hungry Pants differentiates itself through a “plant-curious” menu that caters to a range of dietary preferences and restrictions. Whether patrons are gluten-free, vegan, or simply health-conscious, they can find something to suit their taste. Highlighting the diversity of the menu, options such as the Fried Chicken Sammie, featuring panko-breaded organic chicken, and the Combusto Pasta, a vegan mac and cheese infused with spinach, artichoke, and mushrooms topped with a house-made crumble, tantalize guests’ palates.

The impetus for this menu evolution came from a personal lifestyle change experienced by Marin. As one of the founding members of CrossFit Winter Park, he embarked on a health journey that entailed altering his eating habits. In realizing that cupcakes no longer aligned with his newfound focus on health, he decided to offer a menu that caters to wellness-conscious individuals seeking delicious and nutritious options.

Hungry Pants invites guests into a diner-style space adorned with retro decor that pays homage to the building’s storied past. Previously a music venue and a barbecue establishment, this free-standing structure resonates with the local community, fostering a sense of nostalgia and appreciation. Bright pink-washed walls and frames displaying quirky vintage pants contribute to the establishment’s distinctive ambiance.

Beyond culinary contributions, Alex Marin views Hungry Pants as a platform for inclusivity and acceptance. Firmly rooted in the Orlando community, Marin recognizes the significance of providing a safe haven where everyone feels welcomed. Through his hiring practices and commitment to open dialogue, he ensures a work environment where LGBTQ+ individuals can thrive amidst an increasingly challenging political climate. Marin maintains that actions speak louder than words, and he exemplifies this belief by supporting and respecting his employees’ gender identities and sexual orientations.

Pride Month coincides with a tumultuous period for the LGBTQ+ community in Florida, following the enactment of various laws widely perceived as discriminatory. In the face of these obstacles, Marin emphasizes the importance of forging ahead and inspiring others. By maintaining a focus on empowerment and opportunities within his business and the broader Orlando community, he aims to preserve the city’s inclusive and loving fabric. Marin asserts that Pride extends beyond the bounds of the gay community, encompassing families, allies, children, grandparents, and individuals from all walks of life. He aims to foster a collective celebration that strengthens the bonds of unity and love.

As a local business owner, Alex Marin acknowledges that he is not a politician. Nonetheless, he remains committed to upholding the spirit of Orlando as the “city beautiful” and ensuring that the community thrives. Through Hungry Pants and his civic involvement, Marin seeks to contribute to a future defined by love, kindness, and acceptance.
