Orlando man charged with armed theft while trying to get an Apple ID for a stolen iPhone

ORANGE COUNTY, Florida. – An Orlando man was taken into custody after an armed theft in Orange County on Tuesday, according to the sheriff’s office.

MPs said they responded after receiving reports of a car theft at a RaceTrac gas station at 1819 N. Alafaya Trail around 2:22 p.m.

Yandel Ortiz, 19, approached a man filling his car with gasoline and pointed a gun at him, ordering the victim to get back into his car, deputies said.

Once the victim was in the car, Ortiz got into the passenger seat and demanded that the victim hand over all of her belongings to him, shooting him through the windshield to “prove he was serious,” according to the arrest report.

The report says the victim gave Ortiz an iPhone, a gold chain, diamond earrings, an engagement ring, and an engagement ring.

However, Ortiz wanted information about the iPhone’s Apple ID, and the victim said his wife had the information, deputies said. As a result, Ortiz forced the victim to return home at gunpoint so that Ortiz could get information, the report said.

Upon arriving at the victim’s home, Ortiz allowed him inside to get his wife’s Apple ID details, though the victim instead locked the doors, told her family to go upstairs and called law enforcement, deputies said.

Ortiz fled the house in the victim’s car, though cops eventually managed to catch him on the K Street loop at 600 Rose Road near Magical Carwash, where many law enforcement vehicles were seen Tuesday afternoon.

According to investigators, Ortiz told them that he had indeed been kidnapped and threatened with rape at gunpoint, although detectives stated that his “history of events was inconsistent”. The deputies also stated that fentanyl was found in Ortiz’s belongings.

The deputies added that no one was shot or killed during the incident.

Ortiz is charged with theft of a car with a firearm, grand larceny, firing a weapon in public, aggravated assault, kidnapping and criminal disorderly conduct. He is held without bail.
