Opening of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo

The sound of hooves mixed with the sound of spurs in the streets Fort Worth Stock show and rodeo opening day.

“This is Cowtown, a city of cowboys and culture, some say it’s the modern West,” FWSSR spokesman Matt Brockman said. “It’s all celebrated here for 23 amazing days!”

After the pandemic, it is hoped that this year’s Fort Worth Stock Show and the 126th year of the rodeo will be the biggest.

FWSSR brings exhibitions and competitions together in one place. People from all over Texas and 34 states compete this year.

“These cows are our children,” dairy farm manager Justin Burris said. Burris showcases dairy cows like 1800lb Pizza at the stock show. “We treat them like our own children.”

Barris, who comes from the Panhandle, says the FWSSR gives people a chance to see where their food comes from.

“Milk workers are some of the hardest working people in the country,” Burris said. “They get up before sunrise and don’t go home to see their family until 9 or 10 pm.”

In the showroom, the vendors have everything a cowboy or cowgirl needs…or if you just want to look like that.

“There are people here who have never worn a cowboy hat,” Job Sanchez Jr. said as he steamed and hand-shaped the hat. “I remember the first open crown I had with my father.”

Sanchez’s father, Job Sanchez Sr. Jobs hats. Last year, they took center stage in the FWSSR showroom. Sanchez Jr. says they help introduce cowboy hats to new people.

“If you enter, this will be your hat. We will place it in the center of your face,” Sanchez explained. “If someone else wears it, it will look crooked on them, so it’s 100% customized for you!”
