One-year-old boy in critical condition after redwood tree fell into Boulder Creek home

A one-year-old boy is in critical condition on Tuesday after a sequoia fell on his home in Boulder Creek, firefighters said.

The child was conscious and breathing on his own when he was transferred to the ambulance, which took him to the Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.

“The patient could not be removed without removing this tree, so we had crews on the roof and inside the structure, in the living room, where they eventually cut this weight and removed it from the roof. patient,” said Boulder Creek Fire Chief Mark Bingham.

Firefighters said no one else in the house was hurt.

“For locals and patients, this is dramatic for the small community here that has recently taken some casualties, the strikes keep coming and we can’t wait for it to stop,” Bingham said.

In recent hours, the Boulder Creek Fire District said they had more than 20 reports of downed trees, residents being locked in their homes and roadblocks.

“Stay sheltered in place if possible, now is not the time to walk the dogs or drive to the store just to drive to the store, wait until the storm has passed,” Bingham said.

The one-year-old boy was transferred to a hospital in San Jose, where he is receiving trauma care.

The Red Cross is helping this family with temporary shelter and other resources.
