One person was seriously injured in a fire in a residential building in the village of Ewing

EWING TOWNSHIP (MERCER) – One person was seriously injured in a fire that engulfed a house this morning near the township border with Trenton.

The injured man, whose identity has not been released by authorities but who is believed to be a resident of the home, was transported by an Ewing Township ambulance to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton. The man was reportedly flown by medical helicopter to the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center’s burn center in Livingston.

Professional firefighters from the Township of Ewing and volunteers from the Prospect Heights and West Trenton fire companies were dispatched to the scene of the fire at 210 Parkway Avenue at 9:12 am. Two Ewing fire crews were already on their way, returning from a previous false alarm at Buttonwood. Drive, and were able to quickly respond to Parkway Avenue.

By the time firefighters arrived, the second floor of the apartment building was completely engulfed in flames, flames escaping from the front windows. Fortunately, the victim managed to get out of the burning house and was outside when firefighters arrived.

Because Parkway Avenue is part of the municipal boundary between Ewing and Trenton, the Trenton Fire Department also dispatched Engine Crews 1, 8, and 9 and Ladder 1 to the scene to help put out the blaze.

The firefighters worked under Prospect Heights Fire Chief Doug Brower. The fire was officially declared under control at 9:48 am. A neighbor’s house at 208 Parkway Avenue suffered some siding damage from radiant heat but was otherwise spared damage.

Investigators from the Ewing Police Department, the Ewing Fire Department, the Mercer County Attorney’s Office and the Mercer County Fire Department are investigating the cause of the fire.
