One person died in a murder in Gilroy, a suspect arrested south of Salinas after stealing the victim’s car.

GILROY, California. (KION-TV) — Gilroy police have announced that a suspect has been arrested in Salinas in connection with a reported murder that took place early Tuesday morning.

The man was identified as 27-year-old Angel Ochoa-Moreno from Auckland.

Officers said they responded to reports of an injury crash in the 1300 block of Pheasant Drive around 00:24. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 33-year-old man on the street with a reported gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

An initial investigation found that the victim was confronted by Ochoa Moreno, who stole his car, police said. During the confrontation, the suspect shot the victim and fled in his car.

The California Highway Patrol found the stolen car and arrested the suspect south of Salinas after a chase.

Police said Ochoa Moreno was incarcerated in the Santa Clara County Jail on charges of murder and auto theft.
