On Lake Eola in Orlando, a rally was held against the governor of Florida.

ORLANDO, Florida. – On Wednesday evening, a protest rally was held in Orlando against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The rally was held at Lake Eola and protesters discussed their concerns about the governor’s agenda.

Carlos Guillermo, a former Florida MP and member of the political advocacy group Equality Florida, said DeSantis was focused on the culture wars.

“We know that their number one priority is not to solve real problems, but to advance DeSantis’ political ambitions,” Guillermo said.

DeSantis spoke about many of his and his supporters’ concerns at a rally in Tampa on Tuesday, discussing books in Florida schools that many felt were inappropriate.

During the speech, DeSantis denied claims that he and his administration sought to ban the books.

“They will say we ban books. The Florida Department of Education does not ban any books. It’s a lie. It was never true. The Department of Education has never directed any school district or school to empty or close bookshelves,” Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. said at an event Tuesday.

Instead, DeSantis pointed to several books found in schools that he and other parents found overly “graphic”, including “Flamer” by Mike Curato; “Let’s Talk About It” by Erica Moen and Matthew Nolan; “Gender Queer” by Maya Kobabe; and several titles by Rupi Kaur.

Jen Cousins, founder of the Florida Freedom Reading Project, said it pains her to see DeSantis cite these books because her daughter identifies as non-binary.

The cousins also brought free books that local schools might have.

“I have a children’s book about systemic racism,” worried mum Anelli Becerra told News 6. “I have two children at home and I think it is very important for them to be aware of systemic racism and how it affects them and their peers.”
