A bakery owner in Oakland was attacked and robbed while sitting in his car downtown on Monday.

The attacker broke into a occupied car just before 12:30 p.m. and stole items before returning to a nearby car waiting, the Oakland Police Department said.

The victim got out of the car and tried to retrieve her belongings, but was knocked to the ground on Webster Street, where she sustained injuries, police said.

Police say she was then hospitalized and is now stable but in critical condition.

Radio host and KPFA producer Mitch Jezerich identified the victim as Angel Cakes founder Jan Angel in a Facebook post.

Jezeric, who identified himself as a friend of Angel, wrote that the baker had suffered serious head injuries and was on life support.

“Some of her people who provide updates have asked to let others know,” Jeserich wrote. “I hate that this happened at all and I’m afraid it happened in my own neighborhood.”

The police department continues to investigate.
