Jen Angel, a social justice activist and founder of the popular Angel Cakes bakery in downtown Oakland, has passed away, friends said in an online message on Thursday.

Angel was hospitalized on Monday after a robbery in downtown Oakland left her critically injured. A statement announcing her death shortly before 6 p.m. stated that she had lost all brain function and would not regain consciousness.

Angel was robbed while sitting in a car near Webster and 21st Streets. After chasing the suspect to retrieve the stolen items, Angel’s clothing apparently caught on the suspects’ car door and was “dragged over 50 feet before falling in the middle of the street,” according to a San Jose crime brief. Mercury news.

In an earlier statement, Angel’s friends on Thursday shared their feelings for her and gratitude for the outpouring of support they’ve received since the incident.

“Jen cultivates community wherever she goes,” wrote Pete Wojwod. “Her cupcakes, her organizational work, and every other element of her life has always been an invitation to the beautiful world she hopes to build, where everyone is valued, cared for and celebrated.”

Another friend of Angel’s, Moira Birss, has set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to cover her medical expenses and financial support for her family. The fund has raised more than $100,000 since Wednesday.

Should an arrest be made in the case, Angela’s family “is committed to using all available alternatives to traditional prosecution, such as restorative justice,” according to a statement announcing her passing.
