NYPD to redesign ‘iconic’ cop cars and add 360-degree cameras

The classic NYPD cop car is getting a RoboCop-style reboot.

The department is in the process of upgrading its fleet of patrol cars, which will now have 360-degree cameras to monitor the streets at all times, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said Wednesday.

The city’s top police officer made his announcement during the NYPD’s annual Midtown Breakfast hosted by the NYPD Foundation.

The NYPD has unveiled a new blue and green color scheme for its police cruisers.

“The NYPD RMP is iconic,” Sewell said during her speech. “We are looking into potential design changes as we speak.”

RMP stands for Radio Auto Patrol, a name coined decades ago that is still commonly used for NYPD marked vehicles.

While the new design is yet to be finalized, Sewell showed a short video of the new car, which will have a green stripe running down the sides that connects to the NYPD’s 100th Anniversary Flag.

Each vehicle will also have a QR code printed on it, which residents can scan and connect to NYPD websites.

Sewell said the new design “will keep our officers safe, will have a QR code to improve customer service and an updated interior for a more efficient and comfortable work environment for our officers.”

The new design is just part of the department’s 2023 Strategic Plan, which includes diversifying the workforce, providing better education, improving community relations, promoting community policing, and “promoting public safety and respect.”

“We need to stay open-hearted and open-minded to truly embrace this stepping-forward philosophy, because at its core, it requires us to never stop innovating,” Sewall said. “We can never accept what we have as final and we must always strive to exceed expectations.”
