NYPD officer dies 3 days after being shot during off-hours robbery in Brooklyn: sources

A 26-year-old NYPD officer shot dead in a botched robbery in Brooklyn over the weekend has died, multiple law enforcement sources told NBC New York, a day after the shooting suspect was arrested.

Adid Fayaz, a father of two, died Tuesday evening, hours after NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell announced the arrest of 38-year-old Randy Jones. Jones was handcuffed by an NYPD detective assigned to the U.S. Marshals Regional Task Force, officials said, and they added that Fayaz’s own handcuffs brought him into police custody.

“We wanted him to know what he did to this officer and that he was handcuffed by this officer,” said NYPD Detective Chief James Essig. “I think it sends a powerful message.”

Fayaz was taken off life support earlier in the day and will be transferred to the morgue on Tuesday evening.

Jones, from New York, was arrested Monday night at the Rockland County Days Inn after he fled there with his girlfriend and five young children following a Saturday night shooting, police said. Essig said Jones was extradited to Brooklyn on Monday evening and is expected to face charges in the Fayaz case as early as Tuesday afternoon. According to investigators, after the arrest, he asked for a lawyer.

According to Essig, the officer negotiated the purchase of the Honda Pilot in Brooklyn for $24,000 on the Facebook marketplace. He originally planned to go to the point of sale with his brother-in-law on Friday night, but that was pushed back to Saturday. They drove together in their son-in-law’s car to Ruby Street near McDonald’s.

According to Essig, the couple were met by a man in a black jacket with a beard and mustache, who walked them to the driveway and jokingly asked if either of them had a gun. They both said no, after which Essig said that Jones had headlocked Fayaz, demanded $24,000, and pointed the gun at his son-in-law when Fayaz said he didn’t have one.

According to Essig, Fayaz managed to extricate himself from the headlock, and the gun went off. Jones allegedly kept shooting at the brothers as he ran. The brother-in-law drew Fayaz’s weapon from its holster and fired at least six times. According to Essig, Jones got into the SUV and drove away. Fayaz was wounded in the chaos.

DVR video from the son-in-law’s SUV helped investigators identify the runaway SUV and trace the driver. Around 8:10 p.m. Saturday, after the shooting, a black car pulled into the Department of Sanitation’s parking lot on Park Avenue and the same person got out, Essig said. He was later seen getting into another car with a woman and five children. It was the vehicle that investigators tracked to the Days Inn in Nanuet, where Jones was arrested.

The friend was interrogated, but she will not be charged. Five children aged from 6 months to 11 years were released to her. According to Essig, charges have been filed against Jones, for whom a search warrant has been issued.

No other details were provided.

Investigators are also looking into whether the Saturday incident could be part of the scheme.

Mayor Eric Adams said Fayaz was a five-year patrol veteran.

“Too many illegal weapons are in the hands of bad people and do bad things,” the mayor said. “I talked to the officer’s wife, saw his beautiful children. We all lift up his family in prayer. We will catch the culprit.”

According to Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell and Mayor Eric Adams, the officer is fighting for his life in a Brooklyn hospital.
