NYPD cop becomes latest victim of TikTok car theft

A group of thieves stole an unmarked NYPD car and drove it for a nearly 12-hour pleasure trip before crashing in the Bronx on Tuesday morning, The Post has learned.

Four hijackers stole an undercover black KIA near the 45th Precinct Detective Bureau near Westchester and Lane Avenue at approximately 00:30, according to police.

The car was not seen again until 11:20 a.m., when troopers spotted it about four miles away and started chasing it, police said.

The theft has all the hallmarks of the TikTok problem, which has been blamed for a massive rise in stolen Kias and Hyundai cars in New York, according to police.

In a test that has been viewed millions of times on social media, thieves use a USB cable to bypass the ignition through the steering column.

It was later discovered about four miles away and appears to be related to the TikTok viral trend that has affected Kia and Hyundai in New York.

Police say cars from these companies, manufactured between 2010 and 2021 with turnkey ignitions rather than key fobs, are vulnerable to the trend.

Earlier this month, the NYPD warned residents of an alarming surge in similar car thefts in Staten Island.

Police officials urged the owners to use some old car theft protection technology such as steering wheel locks like the well known Club until the manufacturers release a software update.

Police questioned two people they believed were involved, but as of Tuesday afternoon, neither had been charged.
