NYPD Commander Who Was Once Transferred Due To Community Backlash Is Now About To Be Promoted

An NYPD commander who was once transferred from a Brooklyn police station due to community backlash is due to be promoted later this week, The Post has learned.

Inspector John Mastronardi will be named Deputy Chief on Friday and will work in the department chief’s office, according to the department’s memorandum announcing the ceremony.

Mastronardi was transferred from the 75th Precinct in East New York in March 2021 following an online petition from community leaders demanding that he be removed from complaints of poor leadership and police accountability.

“He lost touch with our community,” the Rev. Kevin McCall wrote at the time. “He doesn’t have the leadership ability to change the history of misconduct in this police station. We need someone [sic] with effective leadership that can help improve the quality of life for East New Yorkers.”

On Friday, Inspector John Mastronardi will be promoted to Deputy Chief.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the head of the police was caught on camera without a mask – his cops dispersed a group of men for not maintaining social distance.

“I believe in the spirit of redemption and I hope he learned his lesson,” the reverend told The Post, adding that “we got him out of the precinct.”
