NYC police cruiser hits pedestrian in chain reaction

The NYPD said a 52-year-old woman was hit by an NYPD police vehicle in a multi-vehicle crash while she was responding to an emergency call.

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. Friday in the Far Rockaway area of ​​Queens.

Officials said the police SUV had hazard lights on and was about to overtake the vehicle on the left when the vehicle turned in front of the cruiser. The cruiser crashed into the car. The force of the collision sent the cruiser back to the pavement, where it crashed into a pedestrian who was standing in the bike lane just around the corner, police said. The cruiser then crashed into an unoccupied vehicle.

The woman, whose name has not been released until the family is notified, died in the hospital. According to police, four police officers who were in the SUV were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the car that turned in front of the cruiser was not injured.

Police said the cruiser responded to an emergency call from another officer asking for help.

Authorities said on Saturday they were still investigating the crash.
