“Not only the family suffers, but also Orlando”: the family of a famous promoter spoke out after he was shot dead

ORLANDO, Florida. – A community surrounds the family of a man shot dead during a candlelight vigil over the weekend, where the victim’s mother now demands answers.

“Why,” said Tuvanan Ware, “you know, he went to work again, children, and here he is.”

Ware sat down with News 6 to talk about her son, Derek Cummings, 31, who was gunned down early Saturday at Carrington Park Condominiums in Casselberry.

Casselberry police say they believe Cummings had an altercation with someone before the shots were fired.

“I told the officer I was there that morning,” Ware said, describing how she knew her son had died.

Ware says that by the time officers told her that Cummings had died, she was already praying over the scene where Cummings was killed, not knowing it was him.

She told News 6 that she was taking her grandchildren and was unable to see much of the scene at the time. When she talked to Cummings’ girlfriend about the situation, she learned that her son didn’t come home that night.

After that, she said, she became worried and tried to file a missing person report, but moments later she received word that it was her son, whom she had prayed for at a site she had seen in his compound earlier that day.

“I shouldn’t have seen him at that particular point in time,” Ware said. “I don’t think I could handle it, you know I was there and I knew that’s where it all happened.”

Ware says her son was a loving father and a well-known Orlando promoter under the name Antwine Miles.

The stage name Antvoine comes from a Cummings relative whom he admired as a child.

Ware says the support from the community has been overwhelming, noting the continued support online.

On Sunday, more than 1,400 people discussed Antvoine’s name on Facebook, many of whom expressed support for the family.

Community members continued to share their love for the promoter and activist by organizing a vigil for the family.

“Our prayer and condolences to Antoine’s mother. Antvoine was not only a promoter, he was an activist and a friend of mine,” said one person who attended the Sunday candlelight service.

During the vigil, a cross was made with the name of Antvoine, which was signed by those present to give to the family.

“Not only the family is suffering, but also Orlando. Whoever did this took a lot from the city of Orlando,” Ware said.

As the Casselberry police continue their investigation, Ware said she would stay strong for the sake of her family.

“I believe that God does not make any mistakes, of course, do I want my child to be here, yes, but I know that he is better. Yeah, that’s why I’m holding on to faith,” Ware said.

At this time, Casselberry police have not released any information about the suspect.

The family created GoFundMe, which you can find here.
