North Texas universities ban TikTok from campus networks and devices

Universities of North Texas banned tik tak from campus networks and devices.

Prohibitions from University of North TexasThe University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Texas at Dallas came after the Dec. 7 order from Governor Greg Abbott. The directive of the Republican Governor banned all government agencies from using the application on government devicesincluding phones, laptops, tablets, computers, or any other device capable of connecting to the Internet.

Abbott expressed his concern in letters sent Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, House Speaker Dade Phelan and heads of state bodies.

“TikTok collects massive amounts of data from its users’ devices, including when, where and how they are online, and offers this trove of potentially sensitive information to the Chinese government,” one of the emails said. “While TikTok claims to store US data in the US, the company acknowledged in a letter to Congress that Chinese employees may have access to US data.”

After Abbott’s UNT statement, Utah Arlington and UT Dallas took action to ban the popular social network.

“UT Arlington took immediate steps in December to follow the Governor’s directive and continues to take action to limit access to TikTok through university devices and networks.” This is stated in a statement from UT Arlington to NBCDFW.com.

University of Texas at Dallas made the announcement today after the University of Texas at Austin announced it would begin a ban on the social media site, according to report from the Texas Tribune. Texas A&M University also previously announced the ban, according to a report. Battalion.

“The Governor’s memo states that the TikTok software poses a threat to “our state’s sensitive information and critical infrastructure” because it “collects massive amounts of data from its users’ devices,” UT Dallas said in a statement. “In accordance with this order, UT Dallas began removing the TikTok software from all computing devices owned by the university on December 21st.”

Laken Rapier, director of public relations at the University of North Texas, said the university took immediate action to block the site, which is very popular with Gen-Z users.

“As a result of Governor Abbott’s directive to all state agencies banning employees from using or downloading TikTok on all government-owned or managed devices and environments, the UNT system immediately began implementing multiple controls across all of its campuses and locations,” Rapier said in a statement: “These actions include using endpoint configuration management tools as well as blocking access through our networks.”

Abbott also previously ordered Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of Information Resources “to develop a blueprint for other government agencies that will address vulnerabilities related to the use of TikTok on personal devices by January 15, 2023.”

Both agencies are then expected to implement their own policies governing the use of TikTok on personal devices by February 15, 2023.
