North Carolina man slapped with 37 years in prison for beating woman for 11 hours: DA

A North Carolina man was sentenced to nearly 40 years in prison after beating a woman for 11 hours, according to the local district attorney.

Joseph Timothy O’Buckley was recently tried and found guilty on several charges, including attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping, assault with strangulation, assault causing serious bodily harm, assault on a woman, intimidation of a witness, and being a hardened criminal . Branch of ABC WPDE.

District Attorney Ted Bell, representing McDowell and Rutherford counties in western North Carolina, announced the conviction online.

The district attorney said O’Buckley’s conviction stemmed from an incident at a motel in Marion, North Carolina, where he was staying with a woman friend.

O’Buckley reportedly locked the victim in a room and refused to let her go by blocking the door. It is reported that for 11 hours he repeatedly attacked the victim and strangled her, threatening to kill her and saying that she would not survive.

The victim eventually fled the room as O’Buckley fell asleep and ran off to get help.

Emergency Medical Services, the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office and the Marion Police Department arrived on the scene and the victim was immediately taken to McDowell Mission Hospital to treat her severe injuries.

O’Buckley was subsequently arrested and authorities reported that O’Buckley continued to contact the victim from prison after he was charged and threatened to harm her if she testified against him.

Bell stated in his press release that O’Buckley’s trial lasted three days and included several hours of testimony by the victim. The jury ultimately found O’Buckley guilty of all charges.
