North Carolina family outsmarts car thieves with Apple AirTag: ‘They picked the wrong car’

A couple in North Carolina woke up and, to their surprise, realized their car had been stolen while they were sleeping. Luckily for them, their Apple AirTag alerted them to the location of their vehicle and they were able to locate it within minutes.

“They picked the wrong car that night,” Leslie Muhammad told WRAL News.

Doorbell video footage shows two thieves sneaking up on Leslie and Antar Muhammad’s driveway before driving away in Leslie’s Toyota Camry.

“We woke up, I looked outside and asked my wife, ‘Hey, do you know that your car is no longer in the driveway?'” Antar Mohammed told a local publication.

APPLE AIRTAG STALKING AND TRACKING IS THE PROBLEM: HOW TO STOP IT

However, the story of Muhammad does not end there. The couple said they placed Apple AirTags in both of their cars, as well as their phones, wallets and luggage.

“A hundred dollars for a pack of 4 is one of the best security systems you can have,” Antar told WRAL News. “As soon as we get a new vehicle or a new item — a backpack, a bag or luggage — I open it and put it in there just for security reasons.”

Once the couple realized the car had been stolen, they pulled out their iPhones and were able to pinpoint the exact location of their stolen car.

“I can pinpoint exactly where it is and actually zoom in and almost exactly select the parking spot the car was in,” he said.

Minutes later, local authorities arrived and the couple showed the police the exact location of the missing Toyota Camry.

“He was moving, and then suddenly he stopped moving,” Antar Muhammad said.

TEXAS WOMAN FINDS APPLE SAFE TAGK UNDER TRACKING CAR

The Cary Police Department said arriving officers found the stolen vehicle shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday and arrested three juvenile suspects.

“They were also delighted with the fact that we were able to find this place so easily and they were able to contact the Durham police instantly,” Leslie tells WRAL News.

The couple says it took about two and a half hours from the time they realized the car was gone to the time everything was sorted out.

“As technology advances, I think the mindset of some thieves will evolve as well,” she said. “I think it’s important for people to know what’s in place to support them when it comes to their personal safety and your belongings – your house, your cars. If there is an easy, especially low-budget, way to keep your home and family safe, this is the best way to do it.”

Apple’s AirTags have faced controversy in recent months when criminals have used AirTags to stalk victims and invade their privacy.

A Texas woman recently received a notice that an AirTag was traveling with her and immediately drove to the local police station, where authorities found an AirTag device connected to her car.

Apple has put in place preventive measures to protect people from harassment and privacy issues. A person will now receive a notification on their phone saying “AirTag Found Moving With You” if an unknown AirTag is traveling without its owner.
