Norovirus in New York: as cases rise, here are the symptoms to look out for

The disgusting stomach bug is spreading across the US – and it seems especially in New York.

The number of New Yorkers going to the emergency room for vomiting and diarrhea has increased nearly 50 percent since December, according to the city’s Department of Health.

Doctors think it’s norovirus but can’t say for sure because most states don’t track it. Norovirus is a common stomach virus that is highly contagious and can be transmitted through food and human contact. The Department of Health advises that sharing eating utensils, changing diapers, eating contaminated food or drinks, or touching contaminated surfaces or objects can lead to infection.

In addition to vomiting and diarrhea, common symptoms include nausea, stomach cramps, fever, chills, pain, and fatigue.

Doctors say the best way to avoid contracting the virus is to wash your hands frequently. While it’s called gastroenteritis or “stomach flu,” noroviruses are not related to influenza, also known as the flu.
