Nonprofits step in to aid refugees after closure of Refugee Services of Texas.

In Texas’ capital of Austin, refugees are left in a precarious position as a prominent non-profit, Refugee Services of Texas, closes its doors due to budgetary shortfalls. The closure has left several refugees in limbo, and other organizations that work with refugees are struggling to cater to the surge of needs, largely due to insufficient resources and manpower.

In response to the crisis, Joshua Ramjaane, who was born a refugee in Congo, has stepped forward to lead the Ramjaane Joshua Foundation. The founder of the non-profit moved to the United States seven years ago-primarily driven by passion and the conviction that people should not suffer as a consequence of difficult circumstances. The foundation is currently housed within the Westover Hills Church of Christ and provides regular assistance to immigrants and refugees with their basic needs, including English and computer skill classes, and job applications.

Due to Refugee Services of Texas’ closure, the foundation’s workload has almost doubled as they help refugees who are struggling with basic needs. Many refugees are left without aid checks as they scramble for access to basic necessities like food, rent, and transportation. The situation has been emotionally taxing for many refugees, and they are full of apprehension and uncertainty regarding their future.

FOX 7 News attempted to get a hold of RST but was referred to the Episcopal Migration Ministries since they will be redirecting the refugees that were previously serviced by RST to Austin. The news station has not heard back from the Ministries. Ramjaane stated that volunteers, funds, and storage facilities are required for the continuation of their mission. Furthermore, he sincerely hopes that fellow Americans will come forward to offer their support.

Rebecca Baker, a devoted volunteer for more than 20 years, has experienced first-hand the profound impact their foundation has in the lives of refugees. She shares how many refugees have expressed their fears regarding the future. The Ramjaane Joshua Foundation aims to not only offer hope but tangible assistance such as food and rent. The foundation provides refugees with the opportunity to experience the best that America has to offer, including the chance for their children to access quality education and create a better life for themselves.

The public can offer support by clicking on the link provided, which will allow them to make donations, volunteer, or offer further assistance.
