NFL Network Insider Says Brock Purdy May Need Elbow Surgery

San Francisco 49ers fans’ worst fears were confirmed Monday afternoon when NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero tweeted that quarterback Brock Purdy suffered a total rupture of his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). during the first quarter of Sunday’s NFC Championship loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

An injury sustained by linebacker Hoson Reddick in a strip sack forced Purdy out of the game. He returned in the third quarter when his backup, Josh Johnson, suffered a concussion, but Purdee only made two more tries, even as his team struggled to come back from a double-digit deficit.

This is a common injury for baseball pitchers that usually requires Tommy John surgery to repair the ligament, either with a tendon from elsewhere in the body or from a donor. The typical recovery time is in the range of 12-18 months.

Pelissero went on to add that Purdy would seek a second opinion before opting for surgery. If he can repair his elbow without a procedure, it will be ready to start training in six months. Most baseball players who try to avoid surgery end up needing it anyway. One recent notable exception is Masahiro Tanaka, who recovered without any procedures while playing for the New York Yankees.

Moments later, ESPN insider Adam Schefter tweeted that Purdy out of the game for just six monthsbut later added team recommends surgery.
