New York receives first snow of the season after breaking 50-year record

Better late than never.

New York City got its first measurable snowfall of the season on Wednesday morning after breaking the record for the longest snowless season in 50 years earlier this week.

Nearly half an inch of snow covered Central Park as a weak low-pressure system swept over the Big Apple, Fox Weather meteorologist Mathieu Bleu told The Post.

“We got four tenths of an inch. So now this is the last measurable snowfall for anyone [winter] season since the records were made in 1869,” Blue told The Post.

Winter weather in Gotham came after the city made history on Monday when Central Park last entered the season with no noticeable buildup since 1973.

While no further significant snowfall is forecast for New York City in the near future, dangerously low temperatures should be expected in the Big Apple from Friday to Saturday.

“We’re looking at the possibility that cooling could be below freezing at temperatures in the single digits,” Blue said.

Since the fall of 2022, the city has experienced infrequent snowfall – more than a foot below the average snowfall for the season to date.

Both precipitation and cold air are necessary for snow to stick, and meteorologists can consider them measurable. This winter, the city has yet to experience optimal conditions, even after several winter storms swept through the region last week.

The last time there was noticeable snow in New York was 326 days ago, on March 9, 2022, when only four tenths of an inch fell. Usually by mid-December, the first measurable snow falls in the city. Last year it happened on Christmas Eve, according to the Weather Channel.

Other northeastern cities along the I-95 corridor, such as Philadelphia and Boston, are also experiencing snow shortages this season.

While recent storm trails have brought snow to parts of the inland northeast, warm air has been drawn into the I-95 corridor, largely driving this winter’s rainfall.

Despite this seemingly snowless season, New York’s snowiest month is February, according to the Weather Channel, meaning New Yorkers may soon see the first big snow of the winter season.
