New York prepares for first significant snow this season
Old Man Winter may soon finally stop skimping on snow.
New Yorkers could wake up to a few inches of fluffy white snow on Tuesday, forecasters said, but suburbs are expected to receive their biggest reset during what is expected to be the season’s first significant winter storm.
Fox meteorologist Greg Diamond told The Post that the rapidly approaching storm will arrive Monday night and bring heavy snowfall to Westchester County, northern New Jersey and Connecticut.
“We’re expecting 5 to 8 inches,” Diamond said of snowfall, which is expected to continue in regions north and west of the Big Apple until Tuesday morning.
Gotham will be covered in 3 to 5 inches of snow, as will Long Island and the Central Jersey coast. But by the time most people in these regions and along the Connecticut coast wake up, the rain will have joined them.
“It will go on as soon as it snows until it’s probably early [Tuesday] morning,” Diamond said.
The National Weather Service warned that “the amount of snowfall in the New York/New Jersey subway and Long Island is at its most uncertain.”
The forecaster said drivers should exercise caution on their morning commute, but are unlikely to encounter icy roads as temperatures soar to 30 degrees on Tuesday.
“A lot of [the snow] will melt when it falls. So it shouldn’t cause too many ride issues, but it could still result in slower rides tomorrow morning,” Diamond said.
The storm comes in the midst of an unseasonably warm winter, especially without snow. In early February, New York City recorded its first tangible snowfall, with half an inch of snow falling over Central Park. A few days earlier, the city broke the 50-year record for the longest period without snow.
The New York region was spared severe winter weather last week as two storms swept across the US, including Los Angeles County, causing a rare snowstorm warning.
