New York horrific murder suspect gets into a fight with cops who arrested him at friend’s apartment

A months-long hunt for a suspect in a horrific double murder ended with a knock on the door.

Accused killer Jamel Sanders, 30, was taken into custody after a brief brawl when cops showed up at his girlfriend’s home in the Bronx, NYPD Chief James Essig said Wednesday.

“We found him there,” said Essig. “We knocked on the door, he opened it.”

Sanders faced a variety of charges, from murder to kidnapping and arson during the May 16, 2022 execution of Nikki Huang and her friend Jesse Parria. Two of the victims were shot in the head and their charred corpses were found in a burned-out car in the Bronx.

He was arrested Tuesday to end a 10-month manhunt and authorities are still looking for suspect Steven Santiago, 34. Both were members of the Down the Hill gang in the Lower East Side, and Essig said the fugitive Santiago had connections in New Jersey.

It was unclear how long Sanders had been in the Bronx, the chief said, and police had previously searched for the suspect in New Jersey and Queens. He added that no charges had been brought against his girlfriend.

During a brief speech Wednesday in court in the Bronx, Sanders winked as he left a three-minute hearing attended by family members of the victims. He was due back in court for arraignment on Thursday.

Jamel Sanders was detained by police in the Bronx on Tuesday.

Essig said the alleged killer said nothing Tuesday as he was escorted out of the 45th Precinct police station in the Bronx in handcuffs, and he made no statement when he was taken into custody.

A rapidly escalating dispute between the gang and its rival Up the Hill team ended with three people dead and three more injured in eight hours of violence in the Lower East Side, Queens and the Bronx.

Nikki Huang, 23, and Jessie Parria, 22.

The deadly events began when Huang, 23, had her expensive Louis Vuitton bag stolen on the street, with the victim turning to friends from Up The Hill to get her wheels started.

Parria, 22, an experienced basketball player, was killed solely because of his ties to Huang, authorities said.

The suspects took the two victims to the Bronx, where they were shot to death before the car was set on fire, Essig said. He added that two more vehicles were set on fire during the stormy night, one in the Bronx and one in Manhattan, as the suspects were driving different vehicles.
