New York family finds deaf and taciturn woman missing after weeks of wandering on the subway

The family is celebrating this weekend after an incredible three-week ordeal that they say should never have happened.

Their loved one, who is deaf, unable to speak or use sign language, and has autism, disappeared during the Christmas holidays.

Samantha Primus’s family said the woman was found in Jamaica, then taken to a Queens hospital center and then released onto the street with no way to return home.

“My sister was lost, found and lost again,” Sophia Primus said at a press conference on Saturday evening.

Family and friends searched around the clock for a 47-year-old woman who went missing on December 23. She was found the same day and taken to the hospital, and the next day she was discharged.

Primus’ whereabouts have been a mystery since Christmas Eve.

The agonizing search continued for several weeks until it finally came to a successful conclusion on Saturday, when the Good Samaritan spotted Primus, reportedly losing 10 pounds and in need of help, riding the 1 train.

“She looked disoriented, tired, dehydrated,” said one of the women who spotted Primus. “She looked lost.”

The police released the photos and appealed to the public to find Primus in the days following her disappearance.

“She survived by jumping from train to train, looking and hoping she would make it home. We found it with the help and support of people, ordinary people,” Sophia Primus said.

The family is now demanding from the hospital system how this happened.

On Saturday, NYC Health and Hospitals released a statement saying it “provides high-quality care for all of its patients.”

“The system accepts patients in need of various levels of care in all emergency departments and provides them with treatment confidentiality, as required by law.”
