New UF Satellite Campus May Arrive in Jacksonville, Focusing on Artificial Intelligence and Medical Technology

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. — The University of Florida and the city are working on plans to build a new alumni satellite campus in Jacksonville, according to News 6 partner WJXT-TV.

The project will cost $100 million, and Mayor Lenny Curry said he will bring a three-year, $50 million proposal to the Jacksonville City Council while UF and community leaders seek an additional $50 million in private support.

The City said the campus will build on UF and Jacksonville’s long-standing health care ties and provide new graduate education programs to support the region’s growing biomedical technology workforce needs and focus on pioneering technologies related to simulation, artificial intelligence applications. for healthcare. , quality and patient safety, healthcare management and financial technology.

Curry, speaking at a press conference with UF President Ben Sass, called the plan “game-changing”.

“Jacksonville has become a leader in innovation in both fintech and healthcare. We have a robust network of Fortune 500 companies and cutting-edge medical institutions such as UF Health, Wolfson Children’s Hospital and the Ackerman Cancer Institutes,” Curry said. “We are excited to host this expansion of the University of Florida to expand opportunities, recruit talent, and further develop our region’s industry.”

Details are limited for now, but from what Curry hinted at in his tweet, the campus could be anywhere from downtown to a large metro area.

The next steps include UF and the City of Jacksonville officials working with leaders in Jacksonville’s education, business, medicine, and community to identify the most important academic needs and opportunities for the regional workforce.

This announcement comes more than a year after UF announced the creation of another satellite campus in West Palm Beach.
