New parking toll stations to operate in multiple languages in San Francisco’s Chinatown

Parking toll stations in San Francisco’s Chinatown are being replaced by a pay-by-plate parking system as part of a citywide upgrade.

The new checkout terminals are in existing metered blocks in the Chinatown area off Clay Street north of Bush Street and Stockton Street west of Kearny Street, including the neighborhoods near Portsmouth Square and along Bush Street adjacent to Union Square.

Toll stations will be activated on February 13, according to a press release from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

Device updates include multilingual screens with a more intuitive interface, as well as enhanced vandalism resistance and stronger batteries to ensure continued availability. Languages include Simplified Chinese, English and Spanish.

Payment can be made at the checkout or in the PayByPhone mobile application.

The transportation agency said in a press release that the replacement was necessary because the old meters had reached the end of their life and were using 3G, which was being phased out by wireless providers.
