New Jersey water park reopens after ornamental helicopter fell off damaged rope

The water park at New Jersey’s American Dream Mall reopened on Saturday after a large ornamental helicopter fell from the ceiling over the weekend due to a damaged rope.

It crashed into a pool full of people at the DreamWorks Water Park, injuring four, including one who had to go to the hospital.

American Dream said it had conducted a thorough investigation and passed government scrutiny. In reports, the engineering firm found that damage to the cable used to suspend the helicopter was a direct contributing factor to its failure.

The mall’s owner group said the park complies with all safety regulations and requirements and looks forward to returning guests. The helicopter feature has been permanently removed and the engineering firm has found all other features to be structurally sound and safe to use, according to the state.

A decorative helicopter was hanging from the water park’s ceiling when it crashed around 3:00 pm on February 19, landing on several park patrons below, officials said.
