New Jersey City Council member shot dead outside his home, motive unclear

A New Jersey City Councilman was shot and killed outside his home on Wednesday night, and police are still searching for both suspects and motive.

The Middlesex County Attorney’s Office said police received an 911 call shortly before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday regarding the shootings at Samuel Circle in Sayreville. Officers responded and found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds in the car; she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither the police nor the prosecutor’s office identified the victim, but several local political sources confirmed that it was 30-year-old Younis Dumfour, a member of the city council.

A Republican and IT professional by trade, she won an upset victory for a seat on the council in 2021. According to her LinkedIn profile, Dumfur has also served as a Church Director at Champions Royal Assembly International.

Sayreville is about 35 miles southwest of New York and about 65 miles northeast of Philadelphia.

This is an evolving story.
