New apartment complex named after Opal Lee of Fort Worth

Fort Worth is building a multi-income housing development named after a longtime activist and educator, Opal Lee.

The complex is named “Opal” after Opal Lee, known nationally as “Grandma June 10th”. Lee is known for her campaign make June a federal holidayan effort what became a reality in 2021.

“I think Opal will be, as young people say, “the bomb!”. Oh, just think of people having decent homes,” Li said on Thursday.

Lee was the keynote speaker at Thursday’s opening ceremony. It will be located next to sister hotel The Holston, which is close to the Alliance Airport in Fort Worth. Mary-Margaret Lemons, president of Fort Worth Housing Solutions, said there is a need for more affordable housing in Fort Worth and that need continues to grow.

This is a great place to work. Instead of making people drive up and down 35, they can live where they work. It’s a great place for schools,” Lemons said. “With a mixed income approach, we are able to serve both market rate tenants and those in need of affordable housing or labor.”

About 300 units will be in development, Lemons said.

Half of the apartments will be offered at market price, while the other half will be available to households with an income of 80% or less of the total. Average income in the area. According to Fort Worth Housing Solutions, Opal will reserve 5% of units for households earning 50% or less AMI.

Plans for The Opal were first announced in June 2021when a person earning $45,300 or less per year has reached the 80% threshold. Annual income of $28,300 or less is 50% of AMI.

“We know that we have a large shortage of affordable apartments. Probably more than 50,000 of our very low income,” Lemons said Thursday.

On Thursday, Lee spoke about her experience living in Fort Worth.

“Have you ever lived in a house with a shotgun? Take a rifle, you can shoot through the front door right through the back. Never touches anything. I have lived in some of them. I lived in Butler Place, where it was decent housing compared to what I lived in before,” she said. “So I’m thrilled that they’re going to great places to live as well as work.”

Construction will take about two years. Fort Worth Housing Solutions plans to open The Opal in spring 2025.
