NEISD OKs Biggest Staff Pay Hike in Over 20 Years

North East Independent School District offers the biggest salary increase for its staff, which includes teachers, counselors, librarians, and nurses this year. The compensation package amounts to nearly $35 million and includes a one-time retention supplement that impacts all eligible employees. These adjustments aim to provide a salary more in line with market comparison data and will be the largest salary increase for staff in over 20 years.

The returning teachers and librarians who have years of experience will receive pay adjustments during the compensation package. Meanwhile, bus drivers, custodians, general education and special education assistants, and nurses will have targeted adjustments. Dr. Sean Maika, the superintendent of the school district, stated that the package aims to offset inflation and provide compensation to employees.

The eligible professional employees will receive a 4% increase, while hourly employees will receive a 6% increase. All eligible employees will also receive a 2% retention incentive in November 2023. However, the compensation initiative will need to be offset by cost savings throughout the district over the next few years since the state legislature has yet to vote on increasing funding for school districts. Programs, practices, and procedures will also be analyzed for efficiency and effectiveness in alignment with the Balanced District Scorecard.
