Nearly 7,500 Austin Energy customers lose power in South Austin

Austin Energy had about 3 dozen homes without electricity this morning, but that number had jumped to 7,772 by about 5:25 a.m.

This comes as South Austin experienced a major outage that affected nearly 7,500 customers and traffic lights in the area.

It started around 5:25 AM in the area near William Cannon and South 1st Street. By 6:50 a.m., this outage appears to have been resolved and the total number of affected clients has been reduced to 292 clients.

Austin Energy says the South Austin crash was due to a grid lockout, but they still don’t know what caused it.

Austin Energy tweeted.“Blocking a circuit is like tripping a light switch in your home to isolate the trouble spot and protect the rest of the system. The system is designed to de-energize if something happens on the circuit, allowing crews to safely carry out necessary repairs.”

We’ll have more information on the power outage, citywide repairs, and what City Hall is doing to make sure this doesn’t happen again live on Good Day Austin.
