Nasty Winter Storm Eyes New York Area: Heavy rain, 40 mph winds, snow expected during 12-hour siege

What you need to know

  • Another storm is brewing that could bring more snow Friday through Saturday; it looks like it will be mostly rain for NYC although it is expected to be heavy at times
  • The system should kick in at some point before the Friday night drive, and it could be all snow at first, even in New York, but it should turn to rain overnight in the city and southern areas; the situation for people in northern New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut is a bit more complicated
  • Friday’s storm follows a winter hit that began this week, with more than half a foot of snow thrown in parts of New York and ruining two commutes; New York has seen a few inches from this system

A developing winter storm is expected to inundate the New York area, with up to 2 inches of rain and possibly a few flakes, and places far to the north and west to receive nearly half a foot of snow during the roughly 12-hour siege that is due to begin. when you’re trying to get home from work on a Friday night.

For now, it looks like the storm may start with snow (yes, even in New York), but it will likely warm up and turn into rain for the city and southern areas. Snow and mixed precipitation will fall during the commute on Friday, around 5 or 6 pm in the city, and the worst weather will be in the evening and at night.

Some flooding is also possible due to a combination of heavy rain and snowmelt. There is 2 to 2 inches of liquid in the current snowpack and another 1 to 2 inches is expected on Friday.

This system is a little more difficult for residents of northwest New Jersey, the Hudson Valley, and Connecticut. Along with snowfall, there are signs of significant sleet buildup in these areas, with ice buildup also a major problem in our extreme northwestern counties like Pike in Pennsylvania and Sullivan in New York.

Freezing rain is another threat.

According to current models, this side of the storm won’t really show up until late Friday and early Saturday. It will most likely move by sunrise on Saturday.

Of course things can change, so stay in Storm Team 4 for all the latest forecast events, though it looks like we don’t have to worry about schools just yet.

The storm from Monday night into Tuesday resulted in the closure of dozens of schools and a delay in reopening in the New York area. Check out the latest closings here (and bookmark this URL for easy visiting next time).

We are seeing a warming trend ahead of the upcoming weather system, with temperatures expected to rise to nearly 60 degrees on Thursday before highs drop back into double digits on Friday. We could see some showers associated with a cold front early Thursday, but this should mostly happen by the time the morning fever is over.

At the moment, the weekend looks like a mixed bag, with temperatures in the mid to high 40s and a chance of Saturday morning showers. Sunday appears to be the best day, with mostly sunny skies and highs around 45 degrees.
