NASA Holds Memorial Day Celebration at Kennedy Space Center

Merritt Island, Florida. — A crowd will gather at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Thursday morning to mark the agency’s annual Memorial Day.

The event at the Space Mirror Memorial is designed to honor the memory of the fallen astronauts of the Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia missions. February 1 marks the 20th anniversary of the death of the Colombian crew.

NASA’s annual commemoration honors Apollo 1 astronauts Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Ed White, Jr., and Roger Chaffee, who died during launch on January 27, 1967; Space Shuttle Challenger astronauts Francis “Dick” Scobie, Michael Smith, Judith Resnick, Ronald McNair, Allison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe, who went missing on takeoff on January 28, 1986; and Space Shuttle Columbia astronauts Rick Husband, William McCool, Michael Anderson, David Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon, who went missing during re-entry on February 1, 2003.

Coverage of the event will begin at 10:00 am and will include a wreath-laying ceremony. Kennedy Space Center Director Janet Petro will speak with Thad Altman, President and CEO of the Astronaut Memorial Foundation.
