Muni bus driver attacked with fire extinguisher while hijacking

A Muni bus driver was attacked with a fire extinguisher during a car theft around 9 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
San Francisco police officers assigned to Bayview Station arrived at Cesar Chavez Street and Evans Avenue to report a Muni bus hijacking.
The driver told officers he was stopped at a red light when the suspect approached the Muni bus, jumped out the driver’s side window and demanded that the victim drive.
While the victim was trying to take control of his bus, a physical altercation ensued between the two and the suspect sprayed the victim with a fire extinguisher.
When the police arrived, the driver was able to point to a male suspect who was standing next to a fire extinguisher in his hands. With the help of a witness, they managed to apprehend the suspect without further investigation.

The suspect was examined at the scene and taken to a local hospital for further medical examination. Police say the suspect is in custody and the case remains open.
The police immediately assisted the bus driver and called paramedics to the scene. The bus driver received injuries incompatible with life, the doctors assisted him and released him.
The SFPD’s robbery division took over the investigation.
The latest Muni bus hijacking occurred after it drove through the streets of the city in November 2022.
