MPs say 48-year-old wife is on $5 million bail after husband died in the emergency room due to ‘suspicious illness’

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas A woman was arrested after MPs said they were called to the hospital after her husband was admitted to the emergency room with a suspicious illness.

According to deputies from Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, Officers were called to Baytown Houston Methodist Hospital around 6:30 p.m. Jan. 7 about a patient who was being treated for a suspicious illness in the emergency room. Officials say the patient was taken by ambulance from Beach City in Chambers County.

When the authorities arrived at the hospital, they began investigating several inconsistencies made by the staff who were caring for this patient.

The deputies contacted the detective for further investigation.

During the course of the investigation, the investigator stated that he found additional inconsistencies along with other factors that made the illness look even more “suspicious”.

The patient, Joseph Hartsfield of Beach City, died as a result of what the Sheriff’s Department considers foul play.

On February 3, the district attorney convened a grand jury, which resulted in his wife, 48-year-old Sarah Jean Hartsfield, being charged with murder.

The sheriff’s office issued an arrest warrant and Sarah is being held on $5,000,000 bail.

“This is an active case and only limited details can be made public at this time. I appreciate the hard work of the deputies and detectives who followed their instincts and uncovered the suspicious circumstances of Mr. Heartfield’s death, which could be called “death due to illness” and not murder,” Sheriff Hawthorne said.
