Mother and daughter found a newborn in the mulberry forest behind the house

(WSVN) — Florida authorities hail mother and daughter as heroes for saving newborn.

The baby was found about an hour or so out in the cold after she was born, and authorities are now searching for the mother.

On Saturday at midnight, Magdalena Gregorio Ordoñez heard what she thought was a cat’s cry, but soon discovered that her theory was wrong.

In the woods behind her home in Mulberry, she and her 12-year-old daughter Eulalia found a newborn baby on the ground crying for help and called the police.

“I was very surprised that they left the poor little girl on the floor,” said Eulalia.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the newborn girl, who still had her umbilical cord and placenta attached, was left for dead by her mother just an hour or so after she was born.

“It was really cool that night — about 50 years old,” Sheriff Grady Judd said.

Deputies went door to door in this mobile home park where a six-and-a-half-pound girl was found to find her mother, but without success.

“Until now, no one has cooperated if they knew something,” Judd said.

Judd said there are a thousand better ways to give up a baby.

In accordance with state law, infants seven days old or younger may be taken to any hospital, fire department, or emergency room that has full-time staff.

“You can literally walk up, hand that kid over to the fireman, and drive away without ever revealing who you are, and there’s no criminal liability for that,” Judd said.

As for the baby found here, aside from a few bug bites, she’s fine.

Officials said this would not have happened were it not for her powerful lungs, which caught the attention of those neighbors.

“These people are heroes. Real heroes,” Judd said.

Authorities said that once the mother’s identity was established, she would likely be charged with child neglect.
