Authorities are investigating the death of a missing Jersey City woman whose body was found in a shallow grave in Kearney, the local prosecutor’s office said.

The Jersey City Police Department conducted a welfare check on Van Horn Street on Tuesday in connection with a missing person’s report, Hudson County Attorney Esther Suarez said.

The results of the welfare check allegedly prompted police to seek help from the Hudson County Attorney’s Office. During the course of the investigation, the homicide unit found a shallow grave near Central Avenue and Third Street in Kearny where a woman’s body was found, Suarez said, adding that the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. 16:53

The death is considered suspicious, with the victim tentatively identified as Luz Hernandez, 33, from Jersey City, prosecutors said.

The cause and nature of death are awaiting the conclusion of the regional forensic medical examination.

Hernandez went missing on Monday.
