Singer Miranda Lambert and other famous artists, actors and musicians from Texas were in Austin on Wednesday evening.

The Texas Cultural Foundation honored 11 artists with the Texas Medal of Arts Award and raised money to support the arts in education and heritage.

The event was canceled in 2021 due to COVID so everyone was excited to celebrate and honor the artists from Texas.

The Texas Medal of Arts Awards recognizes some of the best artists in Texas.

“I think there are a lot of creative people in Texas for some reason, maybe because it’s a bigger state and it has its own iconic place,” said Luke Wilson, film and film award winner.

This year’s winners are Juan Miro and Miguel Rivera, Todd Fraser, Septim Weber, Christopher Cross, Deborah Roberts, Benjamin Alire Saenz, Lela Rose, Taylor Sheridan, Luke Wilson and Miranda Lambert.

“There seems to be so many creative people in Texas,” said host Elliott Forrest.

Many artists left to continue their careers, so it was like a homecoming for them.

“It’s a full circle moment, I was born in East Austin, this was never scripted for me, so I’m just really happy and never thought it would happen,” said Visual Arts Award winner Deborah Roberts.

“Writing saved my life,” Benjamin told Alira Saenz.

“When I was growing up, I was really good at being creative and working with my hands, which is why art has always meant so much to me,” said design award winner Lela Rosa.

Art also helps to express emotions without words.

“I think that ballet is as flexible a language as English, Spanish, French or Chinese, it is a language that can tell many different stories and tell the whole spectrum of human experience,” said dance award winner Septim Vebre.

Art also brings people together.

“Art reminds us of our humanity and I think we need it now more than ever at this point in the world, so I think it’s a wonderful celebration of it all, art and what it means to everyone.” . and the power they have to change things,” said Christopher Cross, music award winner.

For some, they said they were just getting started.

“As for me, I want to keep working and be worthy of this medal,” Wilson said.

The money raised at the event will go to various programs through the Texas Cultural Trust to support the arts.
