Michigan MP resigns after bodies of woman and two sons were found frozen

The autopsy report lists hypothermia as the cause of their death. The MP’s name has not been released.

PONTIAC, Michigan — A sheriff’s deputy sent to search for a Detroit mother and her two young sons, whose bodies were later found frozen in a field, has resigned.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy resigned on Jan. 22, Detroit News reported on Monday.

The MP’s name has not been released.

The bodies of Monica Cannady, 35, Kyle Milton, 9, and Malik Milton, 3, were found at Pontiac on January 15 after Cannady’s 10-year-old daughter went to a house near a field and told someone her family was dead.

They were not dressed properly for the cold weather. The autopsy report lists hypothermia as the cause of their death.

Kannadi had mental health issues and family members tried to get her psychiatric help.

She “believed that someone was trying to kill her and that everyone was involved” before she and her children died, Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters Jan. 16.

Authorities were first notified of the family on January 13. Then Kannadi refused to help. The family was seen again later that day, and a deputy was sent to check an area about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Detroit looking for the family.

The area was not fully searched, nor did the deputy find them or contact them, the sheriff’s office said.

Later that day, other deputies conducted a search but also failed to find the family.
