Miami Fire and Rescue Opens Miami Firefighters Health and Wellness Center

MIAMI (WSVN) — A new location opened Thursday for first responders to take care of their well-being, both mind and body, so they can be ready to go.

The ribbon has been cut at the grand opening, and the path to the health and well-being of Miami’s firefighters is well underway.

The agency has opened the doors of its new Health and Wellness Center with a focus on caring for those who serve the many in our community. One of the main goals is to reduce the dangers these firefighters face on a daily basis.

“Our joint mission is focused on the early detection of anomalies associated with number one, cancer. In fact, in 2022, last year alone, 75% of the names that were added to the National Monument to Fallen Firefighters were due to death from cancer,” Miami Fire Chief Joseph Zaralban said.

The facility, designed by the agency for its firefighters, includes six different treatment rooms and state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Firefighters may also undergo x-rays, ultrasounds, stress tests, hearing tests, and routine medical exams.

“When we think about building a good partnership, several things come to mind: commitment, collaboration, trust, shared values, mutual respect and synergy. I can say with confidence that what we have meets all of these requirements,” said Carlos Migoya, CEO of Jackson Memorial Hospital.

In partnership with Jackson Health System, it’s a shared commitment to keep those who have served in the Miami City Fireforce, both past and present, healthy for years to come.

“So together, as a family, we will never again have to face the fact that one of our brothers or sisters leaves us too soon,” Chief Zahralban said.

The first stage, which opened on Thursday, will serve the current firefighters. The second phase, due to debut in the future, will cater to retirees and veteran firefighters. The third stage will serve their families.
