Metatesting the new subscription service for verified accounts

Meta is testing a new subscription service that will allow Facebook and Instagram users to pay for a verified account.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Meta Verified on his social media accounts on Sunday. Testing will begin in New Zealand and Australia this week and will be rolled out to other countries soon, he said.

For $11.99/month online or $14.99/month on Apple and Android operating systems, Meta will use a government-issued ID to verify a user’s account and give the account a blue badge. In the past, blue Meta badges were free and reserved for well-known public figures or companies.

Subscribers will also get additional protection against account impersonation and direct access to customer support, Meta said.

“This new feature is designed to improve the authenticity and security of our services,” Zuckerberg said in a post.

Meta said public figures and others who were previously vetted would not be affected by the change. Meta Verified is for influencers and others who use social media for their business but are not well-known public figures.

Meta takes a cue from Twitter by launching a subscription service. Late last year, Twitter began charging users $8 a month for Twitter Blue, which validates their account with a blue check.

On Saturday, Twitter went even further, announcing that Twitter users will lose the ability to secure their accounts with two-factor authentication unless they pay for the $8 monthly Twitter Blue subscription.

Social media companies are scrambling to find new revenue streams as online advertising slows down. Earlier this month, Meta announced a third consecutive quarter of declines in revenue despite an increase in users. Meta announced it was laying off 11,000 workers, or 13% of its workforce, in November.
