Meet Tiki: Discovery Cove’s Newest Caribbean Flamingo

ORLANDO, Florida. “The next time you visit the tropical shores and reefs of Discovery Bay, look out for a small and charming new addition.

The park is currently taking care of a new Caribbean flamingo named Tiki.

The little flamingo hatched last year and became an instant sensation on Discovery Cove’s social media. The Animal Park allowed park guests and the public to choose a name for the newborn chick. This summer, Tiki will reach another milestone when she turns one year old.

“She has a social media following,” said Jennifer O’Neill, poultry farmer at Discovery Cove. “She’s adorable! She’s a lot lighter than the other flamingos we have. Her coloration will be a lot lighter over the next year or two, and then she’ll be a full fledged flamingo.”

Over the past few months, Tiki’s brighter colors have slowly begun to emerge from the white she was born with. Leaders said she is currently learning what it takes to live with a colorful group of flamingos.

In March and April, Discovery Cove reports that Caribbean flamingos will begin their breeding season. During these months, pairs of flamingos may be seen marching, dancing and signaling to each other, one of the first breeding signs they begin to show.

“This will be our third breeding year. Tiki was our first chick to hatch here in Discovery Cove, so we’ll see what happens this year,” O’Neill said.

Guests can get up close to Tiki and all the beauty during Discovery Cove’s morning event, Flamingo Mingle.

The separately paid event gives guests a personal opportunity to meet, mingle, take pictures and even feed a group of flamingos near the sandy shores of the Great Reef. It also gives families the opportunity to ask questions, which have been answered by some of the park’s knowledgeable birders.

Another opportunity to see Tiki and other flamingos is during the flamingo walk. At certain times of the day, bright individuals go for a walk to the water’s edge, where they gather and explore for a limited time.
