Medstar Paramedics Stay Busy on Rainy Days, but Accidents Say Can Be Prevented

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – If you need to get on the road, make sure you are road ready to keep yourself and other drivers safe.

CBS 11 was traveling with a Medstar paramedic, who says many rainy and icy accidents are preventable.

“When it hasn’t rained for a while, the roads get covered in oil,” said John Hamilton, Medstar’s head of operations. “When it rains on them, these conditions are just terrible for trying to go further.”

On rainy days like today, the John Hamilton and Medstar crews are busy – accident calls tend to get overloaded.

“You see all sorts of crashes, people hit each other, they can hit the median, they can run off the road,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton reacted to the scene of the accident, where the man says that due to speeding, the driver crashed his truck into the median.

“I went up the ramp and just drove, the car was very close to my ass and it just started hydroplaning, I hit the wall right here and it slid over here,” driver Christopher Couchman said. “It’s just really dangerous and it scared the hell out of me.”

Hamilton says drivers should slow down on rain-soaked streets.

“Typically, what we see as the cause of these crashes is that people are driving too fast for the conditions where they don’t leave enough space between the vehicle in front and don’t leave enough room to react to a sudden stop,” Hamilton said. .

He also advises against driving into stagnant water.

“If you hydroplan, you are moving out of control because you have lost the ability to steer,” Hamilton said.

It may take you a little longer to get back home, but you can save your life and the lives of others.

“Sometimes the result is much worse than just being hit by your car, you can be hospitalized or even worse,” Hamilton said.
