McDonald’s franchisees unhappy with Cardi B, Offset celebrity dinner: report

McDonald’s franchisees are reportedly unhappy with the fast food giant’s partnership with rappers Cardi B and Offset, with some choosing not to promote the campaign at all due to fears of negative publicity.

An unspecified number of restaurant owners have contacted McDonald’s corporate wing to express concern that married stars – the latest to be featured in the company’s “Celebrity Orders” campaign – could hurt their “family image,” The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

Irritated franchisees claim that Offset and Cardi B of the Migos are living a lifestyle and releasing music that goes against the McDonald’s brand. Both artists have come under scrutiny for explicit content in their lyrics, such as Cardi B’s 2020 hit “WAP”.

Some owners reportedly pushed their fellow franchisees to join them in removing ads and merchandise related to the campaign.

McDonald’s began promoting the Cardi B & Offset Meal as a limited time offering around Valentine’s Day. The menu includes a classic cheeseburger with BBQ sauce and a large serving of Coke, a quarter-pound serving of cheese and a large Hi-C orange pita bread, a large serving of french fries and an apple pie, according to the company’s website.

The magazine noted that it’s unclear how many of McDonald’s’ more than 1,000 franchisees are refusing to participate.

McDonald’s retracted from internal criticism, noting that the feedback it received about collaborating with rappers generated support and excitement among its franchisees.

“Throughout all of our marketing, we are focused on making McDonald’s the center of culture,” Tariq Hassan, chief marketing officer for McDonald’s USA, said in a statement to the magazine.

The couple did not respond to requests for comment when contacted by The Journal.

McDonald’s shares were unchanged in trading on Tuesday.

In recent years, McDonald’s has relied heavily on celebrity-endorsed combos to boost sales at its restaurants. The company has also had partnerships with other musicians including Travis Scott, Saweetie, J Balvin and BTS.

But the deal with Cardi B and Offset isn’t the first deal that has raised concerns among McDonald’s restaurateurs.

According to the report, a 2020 survey of 730 US McDonald’s franchisees found that 65% were against the company’s partnership with Scott.

The company’s internal marketing guidelines reportedly include a clause stating that McDonald’s promotions should not use “music partnerships associated with content that contains offensive language in lyrics.”
